Etude #1 (Villa-Lobos)

Persistence, people….that’s what I’m talkin’ about! I learned this Etude way back when I was about 35yrs ancient but could never play it well because it was too hard. Over the years I re-visited it many times progressing from not being able to play it, to sometimes being able to play it, to now mostly being able to play it. Granted, this performance still has flaws but I can finally play it well enough to be in front of a camcorder and and eventually an audience. I credit persistence and my recent classical guitar lessons for the progress. This proves to me that Guitar players get better with age. As I near 60 years of age this September, I am feeling very satisfied indeed. Persistence can make the “impossible” possible. There are various noises from the outdoors in the audio. Guitar: 1975 Alvarez Yairi CY-140 (I bought it new in ’76) Cam: Panasonic DV (low def) Camcorder with two Naiant Omni mics in XY config (yes, it really does give stereo) plugged into the cam. Audio: extracted and edited with Cool Edit Pro

Fire and Rain (Cover) – James Taylor

A gorgeous song that I learned after watching a tutorial video by Justin Sandercoe. See here….. www.youtube.com I highly recommend all budding guitarist to check out his channel. It has a wealth of valuable information. There are many mistakes (as usual!!!!) but it’s not supposed to be a performance, rather a record of my own progress as I learn guitar. I apologize for the poor sound quality, but I hope to invest in a Samson Q2U Microphone sometime soon (All Donations Welcome!!!) :-) . I’m given to know that, for the money, it’s a brilliant choice for voice and Guitar. But I’m open to suggestions….

It Don’t Come Simple was one of Ringo Starr’s first solo releases, coming out in April 1971. It features a simple opening guitar lick, much in George Harrison’s style, who coincidentally ‘helped’ Ringo significantly with composing the song. George and Ringo performed it live at the Concert For Bangla Desh later that year. Athena learning from the Masters;)

Athena, continually inspired by Jonathan of Breaking Glass, takes up the guitar. She hopes to someday take actual guitar lessons but this will have to wait until she is able to at least say the word “GUITAR”
