    It depends on where you live.

    I would recommend going to the nicest guitar store in your area and asking them if they know some instructors.

    Often, there will be a bulletin board in stores that sell guitars and amplifiers where you can see advertisements from different music teachers.

    Also, different teachers specialize in different kinds of music — country, heavy metal, classical, etc.

    Shop around, and question them if they offer a free first lesson. That way, you can “try before you buy.”

    In Denver, brilliant guitar lessons run about $20 for 30 minutes.

    Brilliant luck.

    If you want lessons in person, most guitar centers, or music stores (straight music company), will either have folks inhouse who do some teaching moonlighting or a bullitin board where local teachers advertise. Also, your local yellow pages, and even yahoo or google.. Type in the name of your town, the state and “guitar lessons”, in quotes… then hit enter, and a list of those nearby will normally pop up.

    If you are looking for online lessons, well, those are all over the place, but a decent one is http://www.guitarnoise.com/lessons.php
    you gotta scroll down a small to see the lessons that they have.

    Also, it might help you to check out some of the software here http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/GUITAR/
    ALL of the software listed at hitsquad has been tried and tested for virus, so, no worries there. Most of what they have there is software, or demoware, But, they still have quite a bit of FREEWARE.
    In particular on that page, check out, “Denzo guitar software III”.

    EDIT:::
    I am keeping my reference above because, while that particular software (after I rechecked), isn’t really worth your time, if you aren’t familiar with music theory, the site itself is still a useful source of software related to guitars.

    You should check out http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=guitar

    and book mark sourceforge, because it is the best place ever for open source software, everything is free there. There are several guitar scale and chord programs, which are useful.
    ::::END EDIT

    If you really want some lessons, go to a music store, or somewhere online and buy a guitar “method book”… You will find levels from beginner to advance. It will walk you through learning scales and even reading in 3 styles of notation.
    1.) tab
    2.) chord charts
    3.) regular music staff notation

    I highly recommend method books, they are what highschools and collages use.

    If you still can’t get yourself to a real live teacher, there are several videos that can easily be bought at barns and nobles or your local bookstore. Check them out in the music section.
    Hope this helps.
