  • raglfragloo:

im pretty sure u mean regardless

  • dimebagrhoads:

I used to be a theory nut! Then I started to play with feel. Now I play with my soul as well as my brain. There’s no right or incorrect guys. It’s just up to the player. Whatever fits the song…then that’s whats goin on the track.

  • TheBluntman2:

7Glitch is no better than these people saying you need theory. Fact of the matter is if what you say sounds decent then it will fall into some scale and or mode. Even some things that sound crappy could follow theory. Don’t get stuck in specific patterns but dont listen to 7glitch. He can place a song together but so can 12 year olds who only use 1 string. Bottom line is theory helps but is not needed.

  • metalhedmike:

Steve vai was taught music and theory, so it’s already embedded into him whether he consiously uses them or not, they will come out. And as for someone who knows know scales and plays from “the soul”, they end up finding patterns that work for them. Guess what, thats all a scale is, is a pattern!!! someone who doesn’t use any theory and truly plays music through the soul could pick up an instrument for the first time in their life, with no experiance listining or playing, and play perfectly.

  • BeatMRT:

Thats like saying you dont need to learn how to write, that writing is a tool for people who cant know human communication in their soul. That makes no sense dude, theory is incredible and any musician who can read theory is better off than any musician who cant. Irregardless of their compositional abilities, What would Beethoven have done if he couldnt read music and hear it in his head when he was writing music completely deaf? Theory is just as vital as improvisational ability, period.

  • RESAKAD0:

    CHUPALA GATO

  • 7glitch:

im not saying theory is no brilliant, im saying people come in here to show off ther “knowlege” and say a bunch of alpha bet letters and i reckon its amusing, and aggrovating. how is it that i am also a “master” and i dont need theory? theory is a tool for people who dont know music in there soul. i doubt Steve Vai ever has to resort to his book on theory when he makes a lick.

  • tighttritenight:

Tell that to Guthrie Govan or Steve Vai. Both know music theory like the back of their hand and are right masters of the guitar.

  • 7glitch:

from now on when someone brings up some shit about G,F,Km, jazz, # ect. it means they reckon there smart but they cant play shit because they go by the frawkin alpha bet and not there heart, im sick of music theory preaching dumb asses i dont know a C from a G but i can shred, AND make up riffs better than ANY of you posers. so take that for “educaton”

  • dethstiny:

I reckon he’s saying don’t get stuck in traditional scale patterns because it limits what is ‘right’. He’s saying you can find your own path between the root and fifth (i reckon) and still have a ‘proper’ scale or chord progression.

  • carulezd00d:

is he seriously advising that guitar student dno’t educate themselves on scale patterns?

  • double91trouble:

Marty is one of my favorite guitarists! Thanks for the lesson dude!

  • grand95rider:

    you are 100% right

  • ThePulseofamaggot:

marty is a god without a shadow of a doubt but his facial expressions when he plays makes him look fuckin stupid

  • darch1591:

fascinating,, very fascinating! lol, Im gonna go try that!

  • bfiorvante:

    Not much of an error…..
    sometimes it gets confusing…..

  • ACDCBoy62:

Really, he’s playing G- SHUT THE FUCK UP NOBODY GIVES A SHIT WHAT IT’S CALLED -pentatonic scale

  • Theoanthropologist:

You are right. Though Marty is playing the same notes as the D harmonic minor scale (D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C#, D), he is playing from the fifth of the scale to harmonize with his starting chord, A major. This scale, A phrygian dominant (A, Bb, C#, D, E, F, G, A), also known as the Jewish Ahaba Rabba or Freygish, the harmonic minor perfect fifth below (in jazz) or hijaz (in Arabic music), Spanish Phrygian or Spanish Gypsy Scales starts with A. Thank you for pointing out my error, bfiorvante.

  • GabeBass:

    agree with bfiorvante

  • callmeelliot:

    awesome lesson!

  • bfiorvante:

A brilliant set of ears is a brilliant tool….

  • bfiorvante:

    Incorrect, He’s playing A Phrygian dominant….
