My boyfriend is trying to learn guitar and I want to buy him a book to help him out for Christmas. There are so many out there. Does anyone have any suggestions on brilliant ones?

so i have this thing about learning to play the guitar. but i dont want to pay for lessons untill im sure that its something iwant to do. would it be effective to teach myself? like by just buying a beginers book or something? my brother has a guitar.. id just need to get it fixed its missing a string.. any thought how i would do that too? please help!! any adivce is apprechieated greatly :)
